DURHAM, N.C. — A man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon outside a Durham hotel, police said.

The shooting occurred outside the La Quinta Inns & Suites at 1910 Westpark Drive, off N.C. Highway 55 north of Interstate 40, shortly before 1 p.m., police said.

A man staying at the hotel said he saw two men fleeing the area after the shooting.

"I heard a whole bunch of commotion. I started looking outside...detectives, police, other cars pulling up," said Christopher Reeves who was nearby.

Police spent several hours examining a taxi parked in front of the hotel before towing it away.

The taxi is owned by Durham's Best Cab, but company officials declined to comment on the shooting or whether any of their drivers were involved.

No other details were immediately available.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Durham police at 919-560-4440 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
