SANFORD, N.C. — A Sanford teen died Friday night after he drove across the center line of St. Andrews Church Road and struck a minivan, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Robert Anthony Young II, 18, died at the scene. His passenger, Nicholas Ellis, 18, of Sanford, was life-flighted to Duke Hospital and was listed in critical condition Saturday evening.

Young's mother told troopers at the scene that Young was in college and was home in Sanford for the holidays.

Jesus Sauzo, 30, of Sanford, was traveling north on St. Andrews Church Road near Kentrywood Farm Road in a Dodge minivan around 7:30 p.m. Friday when he was struck by Young's Honda. He was taken to a hospital in Sanford and later released.

Troopers said speed was a factor in the wreck, but alcohol was not involved. Sauzo was the only person involved who was wearing a seatbelt.
