DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham teen who was shot in the face Monday night played dead to survive after her friend was killed, authorities said. Two arrests have been made in the shooting.

According to investigators, Dymond Patrice Fowler, 19, was shot multiple times in the 4700 block of Glenn Road at about 9:15 p.m. Officers found her dead in a ditch by the side of the road.

Alexis Patterson, 17, was shot in the face and the wrist and told deputies that she pretended to be dead until the assailant left. She then ran to a nearby home for help.

Patterson was at Duke University Hospital Tuesday, but her condition wasn't known.

Authorities issued arrest warrants Tuesday afternoon for Niajel Quashaun Slade, 23, of 2507 E. Main St. in Durham, charging him with first-degree murder, kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in connection with the shooting.

Slade turned himself in to authorities Wednesday, according to the sheriff's department.

A second person was also arrested Wednesday. Alezai Clay, 19, of 3507 Thornwood Drive, is charged with two counts of first-degree kidnapping and two counts of felony conspiracy.

Keisha Patterson and Donna Fowler said their daughters were with friends at a Red Roof Inn on Guess Road on Monday evening when they were abducted. Someone later called Patterson's home and demanded a ransom of $15,000 to $20,000.

Durham County authorities haven't confirmed that or released other details about what led to the shooting.

"I don't know nobody who don't like her. I don't know her as having enemies," Donna Fowler said of her daughter.

She said she wouldn't feel safe until her daughter's killer was in jail, and she worries retaliation may get in the way of the investigation.

"I don't want anybody going out doing anything on their own hands. I want the law to handle it," she said.
