FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — Police are investigating a shooting in Fuquay-Varina that left one man dead, according to town spokeswoman Susan Weiss.

Authorities found James Melvin Jolly dead in his home at 108 Coley Farm Road around 2:20 p.m.

One person is being questioned, but Weiss stopped short of calling that person a suspect.

Investigators have not offered a possible motive for the shooting.

Neighbors said they often saw Jolly sitting outside on his porch, walking around the neighborhood or handing out treats to children.

"I'm kind of in shock because I saw him yesterday. He would sit in his rocking chair every afternoon and wave at us," said Maribel Mendoza. "It was an everyday routine."

Jolly lived in the house with his family, but it wasn't clear whether they were home when he was shot.
