Estevan Martinez

— Police arrested a Wilson man Monday night in connection with a fatal shooting last week at a local park.

Marcus Denzel Hilliard, 19, of 809 E. Gold St., was charged with one count of first-degree murder in the Sept. 24 shooting of Estevan Martinez at Freeman Street Park, where Martinez had been with friends.

Another man, Douglas Castro Medina, 18, was also shot and suffered minor injuries.

Hilliard also faces five counts each of attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Investigators said more arrests are possible in the case, but they have not released a possible motive for the crimes.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2323.

Didn't he know? It was illegal to carry firearms into a public park last week. If nothing else, the law abiding of us can now defend themselves against criminals in parks.
