One killed, one charged in fatal Edgecombe County wreck

Posted January 14, 2015

— One person was killed in a three vehicle wreck near Pinetops Tuesday evening.

Glenn Dickens of Rocky Mount was driving a Nissan Altima north on N.C. Highway 43 when he struck the rear of a vehicle driven by Matthew Varnell, 39, of Rocky Mount, the N.C. State Highway Patrol said. Varnell’s vehicle then veered into the path of a vehicle driven by Ashley Harrell of Macclefield, who had three children in her vehicle, ages 11, 5 and 1.

Varnell died as a result of the wreck. Others involved were injured, but none were life-threatening, troopers said.

Dickens was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed, troopers said.

I agree. While I'm not a religious person I commend you for not backing down from someone who obviously has the depth of a mud puddle. Making a dig like that in the wake of a father, son, and husband's untimely depth does nothing but display ignorance on their part. I have two boys and a wife and if I don't make it home to them tonight and someone wants to send their belief of prayer my family's way I say shame on anyone that would ridicule them for it. Good day and my thoughts are with your friends

It's relevant to me, and to his family who I posted the comment for.

Ashley lives in "Macclesfield". In the article it's spelled incorrectly.

Not making light of it but it wasn't what a non-yokel would call a violent crime. It was likely negligence that happened to get someone killed. I agree that the charge should carry a stiffer penalty that it will but unless they can prove Dickens hit Vernell on purpose, a violent crime it is not.

Matt was a wonderful Christian man. He had two beautiful little boys. This is such a huge loss for his family and our community. Praying for his loved ones left behind.

It's a misdemeanor to remove a shopping cart from shopping premises. It should be a felony when you kill someone with your driving.

NC is soft on violent crime.
