NEWTON GROVE, N.C. — One person died early Saturday when fire destroyed a home on Juniper Road in Newton Grove, according to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency crews from multiple fire departments responded to 614 Juniper Road at about 1 a.m. Once the fire was extinguished, crews found a person's body inside the home.

Authorities did not release the victim's name, but family members identified him as 53-year-old Herman Livy Best.

Best's niece said her uncle grew up in the home, where he lived alone. Neighbor Jerry Williamson described him as a quiet man who occasionally needed a hand.

"I gave him some rides into town, that sort of thing, but he pretty much kept to himself," Williamson said. "He was a pretty nice fellow."

Investigators said there were on indications of foul play, but an investigation of the cause of the fire is ongoing.
