RALEIGH, N.C. — The driver of an SUV was killed Friday evening in a crash at the intersection of Ray and Laurel Mountain roads, Raleigh police said.

The crash happened about 5:20 p.m. when a Jeep driven by Donald Ray Akin, 68, stopped at the intersection then crossed into the path of a tractor-trailer hauling heavy equipment.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Tony Lamont McDonald, 35, tried to avoid the collision by braking and steering to the left, but the crash sent both vehicles off the roadway, police said.

Akin was pronounced dead at the scene. McDonald was not hurt. No charges are expected to be filed, police said.

Neighbors told WRAL the intersection is known for vehicle crashes.

"It was really a sad thing," said Sal Mungal.
