— A 63-year-old man was killed late Tuesday in a fire at a northwest Fayetteville home, officials said.

Emergency officials responded to the home, in the 500 block of Warm Springs Drive in the Ponderosa Community, at about 11:45 p.m. The fire started in the kitchen of the home.

Neighbors pulled Elbert Gene Christen Sr. from the home before fire crews arrives, and crews administered first aid to him before he was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Fayetteville Fire Chief Richard Bradshaw said early Wednesday that Christen had died.

Officials have not released any information about the cause of the fire, which destroyed the home.

Crews were on scene for several hours to extinguish the fire.
