@rayncusa - how are those gun free zones working for ya?

  • junkmail5 Mar 12, 2013

Automatic weapons are entirely legal to own right now... apparently you were not aware of that.

They're expensive, and require paperwork, but they're legal to purchase and own (assuming you can otherwise legally own a gun).

Nobody uses them in crime, because they're generally large, difficult to conceal, expensive to own and operate, and impractical.

These are the same reasons, to a lesser degree, that criminals rarely use assault weapons in crimes (less than 1% of them)

Unlike nukes, there are millions of "assault weapons" in US civilian hands. Yet they're still the more rarely used modern firearm for crime

and similarly why "banning them" is the least effective way possible to reduce crime.

Trying to defend a dumb idea (the assault weapons ban) with even dumber ideas is not a sound logical defense of your argument.

it's a sign you don't have much of an argument.

You know, junkmail5, perhaps you are correct. We should allow assault weapons and high capacity magazines because crazed shooters don't know how to use them. Safer that way. Plus statistics show that assault weapons don't cause that many deaths anyway. Based on your logic we should also allow people to keep tactical nuclear weapons at the ready for personal defense purposes. We'll be perfectly safe because crazed killers won't know how to arm the device but will make the attempt in lieu of grabbing the nearest musket-loader. Plus, FBI statistics in 2010 show zero deaths attributed to tactical nuclear weapons vs. 1704 killings with knives ... Now if you think this proposal is ridiculous you would be right but please tell me, exactly where should the line be drawn? An M61 Vulcan gatling gun perhaps? I hear these are great for perimeter defense especially in an urban setting. How 'bout a plasma rifle in a 40 watt range?

Hope the person will recover from their injuries. Thats two violent crimes in Raleigh headlines last night. Too many senseless crimes on the rise lately.

As for assault weapons they represent a small percentage of the total number of guns in circulation so the absolute number of deaths from them isn't as great but they can potentially cause the most harm as Adam Lanza so horribly demonstrated- rayncusa

The worst school mass murder in US history didn't use a gun at all.

The worst school shooting in US history didn't use a rifle at all.

With the amount of time he had unopposed Lanza couldn't killed just as many with a Musket.

High-cap mags on the other hand generally SAVE lives, because they're notoriously unreliable but crazed shooters don't know this.

The colorado theatre shooting? His AR jammed due to the large cap mag so he had to stop using it.

Ditto the mall shooting in Oregon- the big mag there jammed even sooner so only 2 were shot despite him having an "assault weapon"

Meanwhile the Va Tech guy shot more people than Lanza did using just pistols.

Tim McVeigh killed more than all 4 shooters combined without a gun.

Junkmail5 ... In 2010 the total number killed by all types of firearms was 8,775 vs. 1,704 deaths from all types of knives. As for assault weapons they represent a small percentage of the total number of guns in circulation so the absolute number of deaths from them isn't as great but they can potentially cause the most harm as Adam Lanza so horribly demonstrated. I think banning high-capacity magazines is a great place to start.

Number of people in the US killed by knives in 2010- 1704

Number of people killed by ALL rifles (not just "assault weapon" ones) in the US in 2010- 358

But somehow we need to ban a specific subset of rifles?

  • rayncusa Mar 12, 2013

You know signofthetimes and Life-goes-on, on the very same day Adam Lanza brutally murdered 20 children and 6 adults with an assault rifle and high capacity magazine there was an attack at a chinese elementary school by a knive wielding assailant. Do you know how many kids were killed? Zero! Instead of being killed 22 kids were hurt. The putrid sarcasm in your comments above doesn't escape me "Man ... first they want to take away my assault weapons and now ... NOW ... they want to take away knives too"! Get real and be reasonable instead of throwing up inane obstructions.

Guess we need to ban assualt knives now. Should slim down the population without knives to cut food too. It's a win win.

  • dontstopnow Mar 12, 2013

Is there going to be a ban on knives now. Lot of people using them to kill other people these days... What will we cut our steaks with if our knives are banned....??? Oh my what a terrible thought...:(
