One dead, one wounded in Holly Springs home invasion

Darin Greene, 49, of Apex, was visiting a friend at the house, at 1313 New Hill Road, when he was killed, police said. Harold Michael Evans, 65, who lived in the home, was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

A third person in the home was unharmed.

"I still can't wrap my mind around him being gone – dead – and it's just hard right now for the family," Anthony Greene said. "We're a close-knit family, and my brother Darin was an endearing guy."

Anthony Greene said he rushed to the New Hill Road house when his mother called and told him about his younger brother's death.

"We just can't imagine anyone wanting to hurt him to this point – to this extreme. So, if anyone knows anything, just please tell the authorities," said Darin Greene's niece, Yolanda Greene.

Police said several assailants were involved in the crime, which occurred shortly before midnight.

Investigators said they believe the shooting wasn't random, noting the house is set back off the road and that police have responded to numerous disturbance calls there since 2011.

A neighbor who didn't want to be identified said she heard two gunshots in rapid succession.

"I have a 4-year-old and an infant, so just moving in and then this happened, it's real scary," the woman said.

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Holly Springs Police Department at 919-557-9111.

"For them to be on the loose like that is very disturbing," Anthony Greene said.

The shooting is the first homicide in Holly Springs since a murder-suicide in December 2012. Before that, the last homicide in the town was a stabbing in June 2008.
