One dead, one wounded in Holly Springs home invasion

Posted March 24, 2014

— One man was shot to death and a second was wounded late Sunday during a robbery at a house in Holly Springs, police said.

Darin Greene, 49, of Apex, was visiting a friend at the house, at 1313 New Hill Road, when he was killed, police said. Harold Michael Evans, 65, who lived in the home, was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

A third person in the home was unharmed.

"I still can't wrap my mind around him being gone – dead – and it's just hard right now for the family," Anthony Greene said. "We're a close-knit family, and my brother Darin was an endearing guy."

Anthony Greene said he rushed to the New Hill Road house when his mother called and told him about his younger brother's death.

"We just can't imagine anyone wanting to hurt him to this point – to this extreme. So, if anyone knows anything, just please tell the authorities," said Darin Greene's niece, Yolanda Greene.

Police said several assailants were involved in the crime, which occurred shortly before midnight.

Investigators said they believe the shooting wasn't random, noting the house is set back off the road and that police have responded to numerous disturbance calls there since 2011.

A neighbor who didn't want to be identified said she heard two gunshots in rapid succession.

"I have a 4-year-old and an infant, so just moving in and then this happened, it's real scary," the woman said.

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Holly Springs Police Department at 919-557-9111.

"For them to be on the loose like that is very disturbing," Anthony Greene said.

The shooting is the first homicide in Holly Springs since a murder-suicide in December 2012. Before that, the last homicide in the town was a stabbing in June 2008.

Someone lost their life and ALL YOU PEOPLE ARE THINKING ABOUT IS THE PROPERTY VALUE. REALLY? CRIMES HAPPEN ALL OVER THIS COUNTY.

Perhaps the Rev.Barber will hold a march, or a vigil, or something to bring awareness to these crimes. Or maybe the seemingly endless number of murders in Durham. But then again, he seems to just want to harp on only certain crimes that fit his agenda. Sad...

No, I really wouldn't call them bad, either. I worked in Holly Springs for 5 years, and I really enjoyed the area. You're going to have crime anywhere, and unfortunately, a lot of that crime does happen in lower income areas.

too bad you all are commenting on the neighborhood and not the fact that one of your fellow north carolinians has been shot to death and another wounded....that is what is too bad....

Old Smithfield is technically Apex but yes that is a road with some issues.
I wouldn't say that certain areas of Holly Springs are bad..most of the area is very nice and as the article states there hasn't been a murder since 2012 and even that one wasn't a random crime, it was domestic violence related.

You are correct. It's been a number of years. I forgot that with all the construction and development out there that the road may have changed. That's my bad.
