One dead, one arrested after Moore County shooting

One man is dead and another was in custody Wednesday morning after an altercation led to a shooting in Eagle Springs.

EAGLE SPRINGS, N.C. — One man is dead and another was in custody Wednesday morning after an altercation led to a shooting in Eagle Springs.

According to the Moore County Sheriff's Office, Gregory Cooper, 51, of 137 Eagle Crest Road, shot Ajul Opata Cole, 32, just before 7:30 p.m. Cole was dead when deputies arrived.

Witnesses told investigators that Cooper also tried to shoot Eric Powell, 24, but his gun failed to fire.

Cooper was charged with one count each of first-degree murder and attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. He was being held without bond in the Moore County Detention Center.
