One dead in south Raleigh crash

Posted August 12, 2011

— One person was killed and three others were injured Friday morning in a single-vehicle wreck off Chapanoke Road in south Raleigh, police said.

Lisa Howard Leak, 40, of Peyton Street in Raleigh, was westbound in a 1999 Toyota at shortly after 9 a.m. when she drove off Chapanoke Road, cut through a grassy area and a parking lot and ran over a soccer goal before slamming into a pine tree, according to a police accident report.

The vehicle was going at 35 mph but accelerated and hit the tree at 50 mph, the report states.

Passenger Amy Pauline Chukwu, 59, of Peyton Street, was killed, and Leak and passengers Alexia Shamira Mae Wall, 17, and Erica Jeannette Freeman, 39, were injured.

The report indicates that Leak might have suffered from some sort of medical condition in the crash.

How fast could they be going back there??

Actually, RB, there are 2 grocery stores at that location. On the south side of Chapanoke is International Foods (behind which the accident took place). From the point of view of drivers on 401, it is behind Wendy's and BP Gas. On the north side of Chapanoke is A&C Supermarket - similar to Grand Asia in Cary. From the point of view of drivers on 401, it is behind Cook-Out Grill and Taco Bell.

In response to ProudBlackSingleMother: I personally find driving on Capital Boulevard and other north Raleigh streets even more dangerous ("adventurous") than Saunders/401 in south Raleigh - but, for sure, they are all very busy roads!

I would like to see more CROSSWALKS for pedestrians on all of these roads!

Driving in South Raleigh is an adventure and usually a disaster.

People drive cars not fit for the road and wheels that exceed its value... loud stereos to drown out the ambulances and fire trucks and they speed, driving way past the speed limit everywhere they go.

To make things worse, they are all in a hurry, run red lights and try to run you over if you slow them down or get in their way.

Did I mention that they love honking their horns... some times train horns.

RPD needs to step up their game, they need more unmarked cars, more motorcycles and less time hanging out with 5G on Bragg.

It's a shopping center at the intersection of Chapanoke and 401. I didn't actually see the accident happen but a friend and I had pulled in shortly afterwards...the accident was actually in the back parking lot.
