SCOTTSDALE, AZ — An Olympic runner who was training in Scottsdale was found at the bottom of a community swimming pool at a condo complex Monday morning.

David Torrence, 31, was from Malibu, CA.

Staffers at the Center Court Condominiums, which is northeast of Thomas and Scottsdale roads, found Torrence at about 7:30 a.m. and immediately called 911.

"Firefighters removed the male subject from the pool and he was pronounced deceased," according to Sgt. Ben Hoster of the Scottsdale Police Department. "Detectives learned that there were no obvious signs of foul play."

It's not clear how long Torrence had been in the water.

Hoster also said that Torrence came to Scottsdale a few weeks ago to train.

Although the emergency call went out as a drowning, it will be up to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office to determine exactly how Torrence died.

Torrence, who had dual citizenship, represented Peru -- his mother's home country -- at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio. According to Wikipedia, he held the American record in the 1,000-meter indoor race. He also ran for Hoka One One, representing the company since 2014.

Torrence's running career goes back to his freshman year at Loyola High School in California. He then ran for University of California, Berkeley, where he broke 4 minutes in the mile and shattered a school record. After graduating in 2008, he started running professionally, becoming a four-time USATF National Champion, according to his biography on Hoka One One.

"Torrence gained national attention in 2009, when he won the first ever road mile championships to become the first man to run under 4 minutes in a road mile in the state of Minnesota," according to a USATF story from March 2014 announcing him as the organization's athlete of the week.

According to Torrence's Strava profile, he completed a 7.3-mile training run Sunday, clocking an average pace of 6:34/mile.
