MANTEO, N.C. — A Dare County grand jury on Monday indicted an Ohio man on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend who disappeared while vacationing on the Outer Banks in July.

Nathan Summerfield, 27, was arrested last month, after a nationwide manhunt, in connection with his on-again, off-again girlfriend Lynn Jackenheimer's death.

Her body was found July 14 in a vacant lot in Frisco, about 30 miles from where the couple had been staying on Hatteras Island.

Jackenheimer, 33, was last seen alive in Salvo on July 4 with Summerfield, their 3-year-old son and her 13-year-old daughter.

Summerfield's brother reported to police in Ashland, Ohio, that Summerfield returned home with the children and told him that he had strangled Jackenheimer.

An autopsy determined that she had also been stabbed.
