Durham, N.C. — Local health officials said that the worsening economy and the pressures of the holiday season are causing a surge in suicides.
Durham officials said they have responded to seven suicides since Nov. 1.
The Durham Crisis Response Center says its hotline has gotten flooded with calls from people who are out of work and overwhelmed by unpaid bills.
The center operates the city's only crisis-intervention hotline.
