SAINT PAULS, N.C. — A Saint Pauls police officer has been placed on administrative duty after he wounded a man who police said shot and killed another man in a weekend fight.

Officer Brent Adkins was trying to break up a fight Saturday at 320 Keith St. in which Dexter Conrad Stephenson, 48, of Delaware, was killed, authorities said. Adkins then shot De'Ante Syval Harris, 25, of Saint Pauls.

Harris was taken to Southeastern Regional Hospital in Lumberton. There was no word on his condition Monday.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to review the case, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
