HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A nurse at a Chapel Hill nursing home pleaded not guilty Tuesday in the death of a patient a year ago.

Angela Almore, 44, of 724 Berwick Valley Lane in Cary, faces a charge of second-degree murder in the death last February of 84-year-old Rachel Holliday, a patient in the Alzheimer's unit at Britthaven of Chapel Hill. She is also charged with six counts of felony patient abuse after morphine was administered unnecessary to other Alzheimer's patients.

Prosecutors have said Almore gave the patients drugs, telling them they were "liquid vitamins." Officials have said Holliday and some of the other Alzheimer's patients who tested positive for opiates weren't supposed to be receiving any pain medication at Britthaven.

The state Nursing Home Licensure Section recommended that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services fine Britthaven $20,000. The agency found the facility didn't ensure patients were protected from abuse, its services didn't meet professional standards, unnecessary drugs were prescribed and significant medication errors occurred.
