Durham County Library and Book Harvest are teaming up for a giant book swap at Northgate Mall this Saturday.

As part of a celebration of Día de los Ninos (or Children's Day), the swap is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, along the Children’s Alleyway near Entrance 2. It's free and open to the public.

Here's how it works: Families are invited to bring infant, children’s and teen books that they have already read and swap out others, all for free. Youngsters and teens will be able to decorate a bag and then choose their own books to fill their bags.

Kid-friendly performances are planned. Magic by David with face painting and balloon animals is at 11 a.m. And Huepa will perform a Latin American dance performance at noon. There will also be slime making with Mad Science and crafts with The Scrap Exchange.

And, if you need more books ... or books for you and the adults in your family, check out the Friends of the Library book sale, which takes place at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, in suite 252 next to Sears. The Friends, which supports the Durham County Library, will be giving away a free book to each child or teen who visits the Friends Book Sale with a coupon from the Día event.

The sale, which celebrates the grand opening of the Friends' spot at Northgate Mall, also is open 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday. It is open to the public both days. Hardbacks will be $3, trade paperbacks and larger will be $2, mass market paperbacks will be $1, and all other items will be priced as marked.

Northgate Mall is located at 1058 West Club Blvd. in Durham. And Book Harvest is a fantastic local nonprofit that gets books into the hands of kids who need them. They offer lots of volunteer opportunities for families.
