North Hills time capsule on display this month

The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will showcase the contents from the time capsule buried June 8, 1967, in the sidewalk outside of the Cardinal Movie Theater. The capsule was part of the Cardinal's opening day festivities. The space is now between Verizon and Bonefish Grille in the Lassiter District of North Hills.

Water had leaked into the capsule, leaving much of its contents wet, and requiring the delicate removal of some documents that were not stored in plastic.

The capsule's contents were sent to ECS Conservation for restoration.

"The time capsule unearthing was exciting because it allowed us to take a step back in time to discover the history of North Hills and the city of Raleigh,” said Bonner Gaylord, managing director of Kane Realty Corporation, which owns North Hills. "We appreciate Ernest Dollar and the City of Raleigh Museum for all of their help in making this exhibit possible.”

In conjunction with the event, North Hills buried a new time capsule that will be opened in 50 years. The capsule will contain contributions from local schools, the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitor's Bureau, Midtown Raleigh Alliance, Kane Realty, News and Observer and WRAL. Contents included a copy of David Sedaris' book, Theft by Finding Diaries, a fidget spinner, Carolina Hurricanes mini hockey stick and copies of various publications.
