North Carolinians learn skills to handle disasters

Residents from across North Carolina will get three days of training on how to respond when disaster strikes and emergency workers can't respond.

CARY, N.C. — Residents from across North Carolina finished three days of training Thursday on how to respond when disaster strikes and emergency workers can't respond.

Participants will respond to a mock tornado and a small fire at Cary Fire Station 7, 6900 Carpenter Fire Station Road. The course includes hands-on training in fire safety, search-and-rescue and organizational communication.

The training is part of the nationwide Community Emergency Response Team – organized through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Civilian Corps program – to teach civilians disaster preparedness skills.
