— The former chief financial officer for a health care provider in eastern North Carolina has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after pleading guilty to federal fraud charges.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said in a news release that 58-year-old William Robert Canupp of Richlands was sentenced to 42 months in prison in a hearing in Greenville. He's also been ordered to pay more than $730,000 in restitution.

Canupp worked for Eastpointe Human Services in Beulaville.

He pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to commit federal program fraud, wire fraud and tax fraud.

Prosecutors say Canupp paid a co-defendant for some work but diverted some of the money for a boat, hunting equipment, video game systems, credit card payments and payments on a beach house.
