North Carolina man receives sentence in 2013 murder case

Posted August 25

— A North Carolina man has been sentenced to as many as 15 years in prison for drug trafficking and manslaughter in connection with cases dating back to 2013.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports authorities in Buncombe County say 31-year-old Mauricus Santel Fleming was charged with trafficking in heroin in connection with an undercover investigation in 2015 into the flow of heroin from Atlanta to Asheville.

Fleming, who was sentenced Thursday, was a suspect in the 2013 shooting death of a Florida man at a local motel after what police described as an apparent drug robbery.

At first, investigators didn't have the evidence or the eyewitnesses to bring charges. An associate of Fleming later placed him at the motel and said Fleming told him about the shooting, leading to the additional charges.
