— Southern Season, the Chapel Hill-based retailer of gourmet food, gifts and cooks' tools, filed for bankruptcy protection Friday.

In a statement announcing the move, Brian Fauver, Southern Season CEO, said the company has no plan to close stores or lay off employees. In fact, planned expansions of "Taste of Southern Season" outposts like the one in Raleigh's Cameron Village will go forward in the coming months in Southern Pines and Wilmington, Fauver said.

Additional expansion plans will be put on hold.

Stores "will continue to provide the excellent service the customers have experienced for the past 41 years, and there are no anticipated interruptions in service in these locations," Fauver said.

The company will restructure to focus on the 60,000-square-foot flagship store in Chapel Hill, the smaller "Taste" locations in Raleigh, Charleston and Asheville and its ecommerce strategy.
