— A Marine training at Camp Lejeune was killed by a hit-and-run driver in the early hours of July 16, and authorities have no clues to who was responsible for his death.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Sgt. Michael Andrew Tooley, of Sunbury, NC, was walking on Old Folkstone Road near N.C. Highway 210 in Sneads Ferry when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle. Tooley, 28, died at the scene.

A Camp Lejeune spokesman said Tooley was only a week short of graduation from a combat engineer course and was planning to return to his unit in San Diego. He had served four tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Troopers asked that anyone with information on the hit and run call 910-347-1751.

Check records of auto shops and put out a call to neighbors or friends who just recently noticed new damage on the vehicle of someone they know.
