No arrests in UNC armed robberies; no explanation for alert failure
Two people were robbed at gunpoint late Wednesday near a dorm at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, according to police.
Posted — UpdatedUniversity officials said a male and female victim were approached by two men with handguns at about 11 p.m. near Aycock Hall on Raleigh Road. It wasn't clear if the victims were UNC students.
The men threatened the victims and demanded property from them.
One suspect was about 5'10" tall and stocky, with a round face and a dark tank top. The other was about 6 feet tall and thin. wearing a white T-shirt and khaki pants.
Students were advised to stay inside, close doors and windows and follow direction from emergency responders, but the university admitted early Thursday that a follow-up email and phone messages to students didn't go out until 45 minutes after the robberies.
An "all clear" was announced just before midnight. Campus officials said they will be looking into the communication breakdown.
"A full review will be launched immediately to ensure this breakdown in communication does not happen again," the school said on its alert website. "The university apologizes for the concern and uncertainty this caused."
Anyone with information about the robberies should call UNC police.
