Nine new flu deaths reported in NC last week
Nine people died of flu-related illness last week in North Carolina, according to data released Thursday by the state Department of Health and Human Services.
Posted — UpdatedSince the flu season began in October, 137 people have died from flu-related illness in North Carolina, 30 more than reported during the 2013-14 flu season.
While the total number of deaths is higher than last year, the number of deaths being reported each week has been on the decline. Experts say that indicates the season likely has peaked, although they caution residents to remain vigilant against the spread of the illness.
Specific information on gender and location for the nine deaths reported in the week ending Jan. 24 were not provided.
The number of deaths reported each week is updated as more positive influenza tests are returned.
The flu season runs from October to May and normally peaks in January and February.
