Car slams into limo stopped on I-40 East

Posted March 31, 2013

— Nine people were taken to WakeMed early Sunday after a car ran into the back of a limousine that had stopped in the right lane of Interstate 40 East near Jones Sausage Road, state Highway Patrol officials said.

Troopers said the limousine, which had eight passengers, stopped because of a flat tire about 3 a.m. It was hit shortly after by a Honda Accord driven by 19-year-old Nathan Graham, of Garner.

Eight passengers and the limousine driver, 51-year-old David Allen Brown, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Brown was charged with making an unauthorized stop.

Graham, who was not injured, was charged with provisional DWI.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, troopers said.

HUH, unauthorized STOP? Granted he should have gotten off to the side, but it is entirely possible he was not able to do it immediately and got hit before he could move off to the side. If the other guy is DUI I hope the people in the limo sue the snot out of him.

People drive I'40 thinking everyone is moving. Stopping in lane is so very dangerous in the middle of the night. Both drivers were at fault.

Cars do die at stop lights in in middle of intersections so we know to treat intersections with particular care.

Wait, the kid was 19 and he was DUI? Sounds like a major felony to me. And how can it be an "unauthorized stop" when you have a flat tire? Hope all are OK. Of course if the Limo driver was not off on the shoulder he should have been.

Perhaps the logic of the limo driver was....anyone who is DUI, would be driving on the shoulder and towards the trees, so stopping in the travel lane should be safer.
    Just kidding.

Even with a flat, can't you move over to the shoulder and out of the traffic lane?

I'm going to guess that the limo driver is now unemployed after stopping in a travel lane. Even teens know to pull onto the side of the road our of traffic.....

Glad no one was seriously injured.

weird that they hire a limo driver to drive them around so they are not drinking and driving..only to be hit by a drunk....

sinenomine - I agree, had that limo pulled off the travel lane and the other driver not been drinking, it would not have happened.

There was not a whole lot of thought evident in the actions of either of the drivers here. One was DWI, which was bad enough, but the other stopped in the right travel lane? He couldn't have driven onto the shoulder? Poor judgment on display all around.
