NC Medicaid committee hears options for extra cuts

Posted August 5, 2011

— North Carolina's Medicaid agency is preparing to slash services and payments beyond the nearly $360 million cut that state budget writers ordered this year.

The Department of Health and Human Services and the North Carolina Medical Care Advisory Committee on Friday outlined extra cuts it expects it will be forced to make because several of the Legislature's instructions require federal approval, which could take months.

That means the state will have to find another $32 million to $118 million in savings in the health care plan for poor children, older adults, and the disabled.

Lawmakers decided to cut $360 million from state Medicaid payments this year.

Because the federal government pays for $2 of Medicaid services for every $1 of state spending, this year's total cuts are $1 billion. North Carolina's Medicaid program costs nearly $13 billion.

    No handouts, ever.

ncguy and bugman, what I don't understand is why no one is listening. Oh wait, it's their stated mission to "get as many people on Medicaid as possible." Cansler has no intention of diminishing his empire.

How about starting with: everyone must reapply and justify their position to qualify. That will rat out 90% of the fraud and waste. Then perhaps you actually don't have any "real" cuts to make...

ncguy hit the nail on the head. Stop paying girls to keep having kids, and make them get jobs. Any job is better than sitting on their rear ends watching tv or playing on the computer. Wal-mart, Mc Donalds, Wendy's they are all hiring.

At least these people don't have any money in it, I have 68000 in medicare and am getting cut anyhow and can't get VA medical even tho I served for 3 years and was promised it.

They could cut plenty of staff down there in the Kirby Building too.

    heres an idea,

How about handing out shots of birth control to those already on the plan.

Nope they keep having children because they know the guberment will pay for them and give then an extra check.

Program should have been kept by the Feds.

If they had started this program on a smaller scale to begin with, perhaps these cuts wouldn't be need and so sorely felt now.

    What a shame!
