RICHLANDS, N.C. — Authorities said two people were killed Friday after a small plane crashed in a field near a rural Onslow County airport.

The crash occurred at about 1 p.m. in a field off Batchelor Road in Richlands, witnesses said.

The identities of the victims were not released, pending notification of their families.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters says the single-engine plane was registered to Peter Hebert of Waterbury Center, Vt.

The aircraft took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and was headed to Wilmington, Peters said. The pilot reported a loss of fuel pressure to air-traffic controllers in Wilmington shortly before the plane crashed, he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board said investigators would arrive either late Friday or early Saturday to start determining the cause of the crash.
