RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina is offering help putting food on the table to victims of the devastating storms that swept through the state earlier this month.

The Department of Health and Human Services says that starting Friday it will open the food stamps program to people not normally eligible for the help. The program will be offered in 18 counties that were most affected by the April 16 tornadoes.

Residents of those counties can receive the benefit, known as the Food and Nutrition Services program, for up to a month. It's open to people who've suffered damage to their home, loss of wages or other setbacks as a result of the storms.
