COLUMBIA, N.C. — A committee of North Carolina Democrats has chosen a former Dare County commissioner to the remainder of the term of former state Senate leader Marc Basnight.
Stan White was nominated to replace Basnight at a meeting Friday night of the North Carolina Democratic Party 1st District Senate Executive Committee.
White is a Nags Head businessman and a current member of the state Board of Transportation. His name will be sent to Gov. Bev Perdue, who will appoint him to fill the vacancy.
Basnight, the longest-serving head of a legislative body in North Carolina history, announced on Jan. 4 that he would resign his seat before the new session begins because of a chronic health condition that affects his speech.
