RALEIGH, N.C. — John Edwards' 2004 running mate will be attending the funeral service for Elizabeth Edwards.

Edwards family spokeswoman Andrea Purse said Friday that the Massachusetts senator plans to attend Saturday's ceremony. John Edwards was Kerry's vice presidential candidate when the Democratic ticket lost to George W. Bush six years ago.

A day after that election, Elizabeth Edwards learned she had breast cancer. Treatments eventually made Edwards cancer-free until it returned in an incurable form in 2007. She died of the disease Tuesday.

Gov. Beverly Perdue, Sen. Kay Hagan and several North Carolina congressional representatives are also expected to attend, Purse said.

Vicki Kennedy, wife of the late former Sen. Ted Kennedy and former White House Chief of Staff John Podesta also plan to attend.

The service, scheduled for 1 p.m. at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, is open to the public.
