Person of interest in child's homicide in custody

Posted February 11, 2010

— Authorities have named a person of interest in the death of a 7-year-old Florida girl.

Clay County Sheriff Rick Besseler said Thursday that Jared Harold, 24, is a person of interest in the abduction and murder of Somer Thompson.

Harold is charged with 29 counts of possession of child pornography, Besseler said. Authorities found the child porn on a computer he left behind at the Clay County home he used to reside in.

Harold was arrested in Meridian, Miss., and was being held under a $1 million bond.

Somer vanished on her mile-long walk home from school in Orange Park, Fla., a suburb of Jacksonville, in October. Her body was found two days later in a Georgia landfill.

She lived in Orange Park with her mother. The girl's father, Sam Thompson, lives in Graham, N.C.

Authorities have not said how Somer was killed, but did say the death was a homicide.

not sure why my post didnt go thru. all i did was explain that she wasnt walking home alone, but with a group of kids, some of them older than she was, when she got into an argument with some of them who were teasing her and she ran off ahead of the group, a mere 2 blocks from home.

sometimes the moderation of these comments confuse me.....

I don't agree about her walking home either. She was supposedly walking with two other siblings (one younger/same age and one older I think). Apparently she got in an argument with her siblings and ran off ahead just enough out of view where some monster took her. I think I'll be driving my son until he's in college. (An exaggeration but just barely).

Rest in Peace sweet girl... :(

What the hell is a 7 year old child doing walking home by herself anyway?? This kind of thing happens every day so you have to protect your kids as much as possible!! It's not like it's the parents fault but you have to use some common sense.

Why was this precious child walking 1 mile home at just 7 years old? This world we live in is way too evil to let a young child walk home by herself a whole mile. Maybe two or three blocks but not that far. Mine would not even do the couple of blocks at just 7.

I was *just* thinking about this precious little girl today. I am looking forward to hearing how they tracked down someone of interest, and holding out hope that this is the right person and (s)he is brought to justice. I won't go into detail about the kind of justice I hope is served...

    RIP beautiful girl

This will be great to close this case. I'm so tired of these people harming kids. Just stop it!
