Tropical Storm Danny struggling but still a threat

Forecasters don't expect Tropical Storm Danny to make landfall in North Carolina, but emergency officials in Dare County are still urging weekend beachgoers to pay attention to the storm and take precautions.

"We certainly want to recommend that if anyone goes to the beach this weekend to touch base with a lifeguard and stay safe," Dare County Emergency Operations Director Sandy Sanderson said Thursday.

Last weekend, Hurricane Bill brought giant waves along the North Carolina coast, and strong currents prompted dozens of rescues by lifeguards along the coast.

Vacationer Greg Norton was on the Outer Banks last week when Bill brought waves.

“The first couple of days we were down here, they had the beaches shut down. They had red flags. You couldn’t go in the water,” Norton said.

Forecasters say Danny isn't as strong as Bill, so the ride isn't expected to be as high.

The storm is still worrying some people.

“You take your chances when you come down this time of year,” Norton said.

Jim and Lois McEntarfer drove from Indiana to Nags Head, and they hope Danny stays away.

"We're on the way. We had reservations. We're only going to be here for a long weekend," Jim McEntarfer said. "We're going through mid-life crises, so why not go for it?"

Jeanee Acree, who has lived on the Outer Banks for 30 years, doesn’t think Danny will create anything worse than what Bill brought last week.
