— The New Hanover Sheriff's Office has identified a 10-year-old boy who drowned off Carolina Beach on Saturday as Master Emanuel Carter, of Sanford.

Master went missing while swimming with his parents and a 15-year-old brother around 2 p.m., said Deputy C.G. Smith, a spokesman for the sheriff's office. Coast Guard officials said the family was caught in a rip tide, and the boy disappeared in the surf.

Lifeguards rescued the parents and teenager but couldn't find Master, Smith said.

A Coast Guard helicopter located him about two hours later. Master was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The young man had the necessary safety equipment. It didn't matter either way. It was his time and what has happened is bigger than what we see here. The information in the story is incorrect. I will leave it at that.

I say this with great trepidation, because I know in my heart the family is in a great deal of pain. Folks we have got to learn from these experiences. We must do a better job of caring for our children! There is a level of anxiousness that comes with seeing our children in situations that could turn tragic. It appears to me that we are not paying enough attention to the uncomfortable/uneasy feeling that come in these situations!

I can't swim, so I don't get in the water. Does anyone know if this child had a life vest on? If not would it have done any good?

I know this family and they are solid as a rock and one of the best families I know. Master was a very well behaved, helpful and gentle young man who loved to play. His parents have a very strong faith and are inspiring to anyone they meet. Words cannot express how sorry everyone is to learn of his death.

I heard about this from my friend who is one of the lifeguards down there. What a horrible tragedy.

This is a tragic experience for this family. I lost a brother in a drowning accident in 1981 and it is a life changing experience. My prayers are with the family.
