SBI investigates Dix Hospital sex allegations

Posted April 17, 2009

— Three employees at Dorothea Dix Hospital have been fired and a fourth resigned amid an investigation that some had sex with female prisoners working there, officials said Friday.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case to determine whether criminal charges are warranted, Secretary of Health and Human Services Lanier Cansler said in a statement.

During an internal DHHS investigation, officials found that employees at Dix had enabled inmates from the Raleigh Correctional Center for Women to set up bank accounts, access e-mail and make unauthorized phone calls, Cansler said.

The internal investigation will continue to determine whether other disciplinary action needs to be taken, he said.

The female inmates worked at Dix as part of a Department of Correction program. DHHS and DOC are reviewing the program to determine whether it will remain in place, Cansler said.

DOC spokesman Keith Acree said 13 inmates had been working at the mental hospital. All inmates have been removed from those assignments, he said.

The men were rightfully terminated, but the prisoners involved should also be punished.

First off, these women are in prison because they've proven they are: not responsible, not trustworthy, not law abiding citizens and commit crimes. The male Dix employees should be fired, BUT the women involved should not get off scotfree. They knew what they were doing and participated willingly...pretty much prostituted themselves for email and phone usage. Likely some of them were used to prostituting themselves for drugs or cash before they landed in prison. Same routine, different location. Why expect them to have changed and even dumber to give them jobs. Prison is not effective in rehabilitating criminals. That's been proven. Want them to work and learn responsibility and self sufficiency? Put them to work growing vegetables in a prison garden to feed themselves, let them do laundry, clean the prison grounds and facilities or other jobs the state pays employees for now. Perdue wants to cut expenses in prisons and teach inmates useful skills, put them to work IN the prison

so the Dix employees gave favors in exchange for sexual favors. Were the Dix employees trained to handle prisoners? Some people think there is such a thing as "common sense". I'm not sure sense is common.

Since when are you not allowed to have sex on the job? Bill did!

I think they should give the prisoners jobs over at the legislature, should fit right in with the other criminals.

You can not possibly be serious. This is just like a teacher student relationship. A person in charge has a person in their charge do inapproiate things. Where it be phone calls, bank accounts, or other acts. Everyone involved should have to be punished according to the law. I can't believe anyone would find this acceptable. A woman should never give her self up or be force to do those things so she can have a right. At the same time she knew the rules and has now ruined this program for many other people. My mom worked at DD for several year back in the late 80's then there was several inmates that had convicted of murder and worked on the release program. If you research you will find that a prisoner broke out and kill a security guard at DD by handcuffing her to a car and stabbing her in the neck with a neddle. This was over close to the property the school was on. This program has needed work for years and this is just an example. Hope they get control of it.

It is considered rape when any custodial agent has sex with a detainee. See PREA laws.

Reading is Fundamental & clearly some of you didn't read the entire article.

Cherry Hospital (D. Dix of the East) use to have male prisoners (from the correction center next door) delivering the mail & doing other jobs on the campus. They stopped that a few years back after a couple of those male prisoners escaped while at Cherry.

I really dont see what the big issue is here. The woman was not raped! Yes, I agree with the guys being let go, because they shouldnt have sex on hte job. That's not what the hospital paid them to do. BUT, the lady was an inmate, she just wanted to talk on hte phone, and get her groove on. You really cant blame her. I do feel bad for the other inmates who have now lost their jobs because of her though.

Oh well, "NOT" surprise how do we expect so..........much from the prisoners when the people we put in charge of them are just as bad!! Charge them both and give them all additional time!
