Snow flurries possible in N.C.

A weak cold front coming from the west raised temperatures above freezing Sunday morning. But a band of rain ahead of it developed sleet and pockets of snow flurries.

In the early to mid morning, a band of flurries, sleet and rain pushed across central North Carolina, stretching north-to-south from one state border to the other. Viewers reported sleet falling in north Raleigh.

By around noon, temperatures were high enough to turn most precipitation to rain. The late afternoon saw some patches of light rain and a high in the upper 40s.

"The rain will move out of central N.C. and most of the eastern part of the state by 10 p.m. Sunday," WRAL Meteorologist Kim Deaner said.

An upper-level disturbance will move through Monday and Tuesday, while a low-pressure system develops off the coast. Those will keep temperatures in the 30s, the skies cloudy – and the possibility of light snow sprinkles or flurries open.

The best chance for a few flakes is from midday Monday into the afternoon.

"There is a chance we will see some snow flakes north of the Triangle early Monday. The best chance for snow flurries is along counties that border Virginia," Deaner said.

However, the timing and location of the low-pressure system is uncertain and could affect the chance of snow. If it develops far offshore, precipitation will remain east of central N.C. A position close to the coast, though, would spread precipitation inland.
