HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Maryland State Police say a trooper was killed while jogging on a road in Orange County.

A tree-trimming truck struck 1st Sgt. Tobin Triebel, 39, as he jogged north along New Sharon Church Road, near Bill Poole Road, in Hillsborough Friday morning, North Carolina state troopers said.

Troopers said the truck driver would not be charged because Trieble, of New Market, Md., was in the roadway when the accident occurred.

Maryland authorities said that Triebel was a flight paramedic and supervised the training section at the department's Aviation Headquarters at Martin State Airport. He had served on the force for 13 years.

Maryland State police said Triebel, who was vacationing in North Carolina, was taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he died Friday evening.

Triebel is survived by his wife, Susan, and daughters Hanna, 16 and Erika, 13. He will be buried in Maryland Friday.
