Site SearchDurham, N.C. — Duke University is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by more than three dozen lacrosse players and members of their families.
The school filed its formal response to the lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court in Greensboro.
Duke officials declined any additional comment.
In February, the players filed a lawsuit seeking damages from 29 defendants, including Duke University and several of its employees.
None of the players in this lawsuit were indicted as part of a now notorious case that started when an exotic dancer falsely accused three lacrosse players of rape in March 2006.
State prosecutors eventually declared the three players innocent and dropped all charges. They reached a private settlement with Duke last June.
Those three have filed a civil rights suit against then-District Attorney Mike Nifong and the city of Durham, whose police investigated the case.
