New State Revenue Secretary Sworn In

Reggie Hinton, the acting revenue secretary since Norris Tolson left the post in June, has been named to the post permanently, Gov. Mike Easley announced Tuesday.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Gov. Mike Easley has appointed Reggie Hinton, the state's acting revenue secretary, to serve in the post permanently.

Hinton, a state revenue department employee since 1978, was sworn in as as the new Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Revenue on Tuesday.

Easley appointed Hinton as the department’s acting Secretary in June after the two-term secretary, Norris Tolson, stepped down to become president of the N.C Biotechnology Center, a state-funded nonprofit.

“Reggie Hinton’s nearly three decades with the Department of Revenue gives him a unique perspective and expertise when it comes to the vital task of overseeing the effective collection of state revenues,” Easley said, in a statement. “I am confident that in his new role he will continue to serve North Carolina’s taxpayers in the same excellent manner that he has throughout his career.”

Hinton had served since 2001 as chief deputy secretary of the department, which collects the state's taxes and works to ensure the revenue laws are carried out fairly.

The Wake County native was graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1977. He serves as the pastor of a local church and volunteers for Meals On Wheels of Wake County, providing meals to the elderly and disabled.
