UNC-CH sets up chancellor search committee
The head of the search committee for a new chancellor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says it won't be easy to find someone to fill the post, which he described as a challenging job.

Wade Hargrove is chair of the school's board of trustees and will lead the 21-member search committee. During a break in Thursday's board meeting, Hargrove said that, although mistakes were made, outgoing Chancellor Holden Thorp's performance has exceeded expectations.
He says the new chancellor must share the school's core values, adding others at the school have violated those values recently.
Thorp said earlier this month that he would resign, effective in June. He's dealt with two years of scandals involving academics, athletics and finances.
“We are launching a national search to identify the most qualified person to lead the University,” Hargrove said in a statement. “This is a challenging time for the university and public higher education in general, and our goal is to build upon the university’s 200-plus years of academic excellence.”
The search committee plans to hold public forums to provide campus community members, alumni and the public with opportunities to share the characteristics they hope to see in the next chancellor.UNC-Chapel Hill also will launch a website to keep people informed about the committee's work.
Other members of the committee are as follows:
- Trustee Barbara Hyde, of Memphis, vice chair of the board and president of the J.R. Hyde III Family Foundation and director of the J.R. Hyde Sr. Foundation.
- Trustee Felicia Washington, of Charlotte, a partner and lawyer at K&L Gates LLP
- Trustee John Townsend III, of Greenwich, Conn., managing partner and chief operating officer for Tiger Management, LLC
- Trustee Donald Curtis, of Raleigh, chair and chief executive of the Curtis Media Group Inc.
- Roger Perry, of Chapel Hill, a former chair of the Board of Trustees and president of East West Partners real estate development
- UNC Student Body President Will Leimenstoll, of Greensboro, an environmental studies major who serves ex-officio on the Board of Trustees
- Michael Bertucci, a doctoral student in chemistry who is president of the Graduate and Professional Student Federation
- Jan Boxill, faculty chair and senior lecturer in the Department of Philosophy
- Valerie Ashby, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry
- Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Kenan Distinguished Professor and chairman of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science
- John McGowan, Ruel W. Tyson Jr. Distinguished Professor of the Humanities in the Department of English and Comparative Literature
- Cam Patterson, Ernest and Hazel Craige Distinguished Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine in the School of Medicine
- Douglas Shackelford, Meade H. Willis Distinguished Professor of Taxation at the Kenan-Flagler Business School
- Jackie Overton, chair of the Employee Forum
- Dwayne Pinkney, vice provost for finance and academic planning
- Kenneth Broun, former Chapel Hill mayor and Henry Brandis Professor of Law Emeritus in the School of Law, where he also was dean
- Eric Montross, of Chapel Hill, chair of the General Alumni Association Board of Directors and commentator for men’s basketball games on the Tar Heel Sports Network radio broadcasts
- Chuck Lovelace, of Chapel Hill, executive director of the Morehead-Cain Foundation

The committee, which will hold its initial meeting Oct. 8, will recommend a slate of finalists to the full Board of Trustees, who vote on recommending candidates to UNC President Tom Ross. Then, Ross will recommend a candidate to the UNC Board of Governors, which elects the new chancellor.
