Death toll now six in Guilford County shooting spree

Posted November 25, 2011

— The death toll has risen to six in a shooting spree last weekend in Guilford County.

Sheriff B.J. Barnes said Richard Brian Suttles, 17, died Friday, five days after his aunt, Mary Ann Holder, shot him and five other people, including her former lover, before turning the gun on herself.

Deputies found Holder and her 14-year-old son, Zachary Lee Smith, inside an SUV near their home. She was dead, and he had a gunshot wound and later died.

Authorities went looking for her Sunday morning after her ex-boyfriend, Randal Scott Lamb, was shot in the shoulder in a parking lot at Guilford Technical Community College near Greensboro.

When investigators went to Holder’s home, they found four other children – Richard Suttles, her 17-year-old son, Robert Dylan Smith, her niece, Hannaleigh Suttles, 8, and Makayla Leigh Woods, 15, a family friend.

Robert Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The others have since died of their injuries.

Lamb is the only survivor of Holder's spree, and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Investigators said Holder left notes taking responsibility for and apologizing for the shootings but offered no motive.

Barnes said the affair between Holder and Lamb was over and that Holder had taken out a restraining order against Lamb and his wife but that the order had expired. Lamb's wife had also filed an alienation of affection lawsuit against Holder, he said.

I know several women who are involved with married men. They talk about him like he's prince charming, so in love with them, but can't leave his wife for a number of "honorable" reasons. You can tell that the guy is never going to leave his wife. These women lose years of their lives hanging onto these low lifes who are only using them for sex. Adultery only destroys people, it never lifts up a family in any manner. I feel sorry for this woman's family. They paid a terrible price for her bad decisions.

How very sad for these children. This woman was obviously under tremendous emotional stress from the adulterous relationship that she was involved in and caring for all these children. It sounds like the guy was really yanking her around, creating drama, constantly meeting her, going back and forth between her and his wife, getting his wife involved, etc. Women need to realize that some men are beneath them and to leave them alone. Alot of women get involved with losers, thinking that they will change and become the man of their dreams. It never works out that way. Women, have some self-respect! Don't get involved with a loser. You are just destroying yourself, you gain nothing. Satan is a destroyer of families. Don't open the door to evil.

It's amazing to me the number of lives ruined by infidelity in this situation. And even more amazing, is that 1 of the 2 parties who caused this situation in the 1st place gets to live while all those innocent children died. I'm not saying Lamb is guilty for the murders, but it was brought on by his infidelity.

"I do NOT think she killed them all either."

In that case, maybe the ex-lover is covering for his wife.

I still haven't read anything about her children's father. Was he in their lives?

  • dollibug Nov 25, 2011

I have to wonder why she would meet up with her lover one day and then make arrangements to meet him AGAIN...and shoot him....without him thinking that something "strange" was going I said...there are too many questions with no answers....

+++I don't believe she did these shootings. I believe her ex-lover and his wife had something to do with it! Why would she shoot everyone including her own children and niece and nephew in the head, but simply shoot the ex-lover in the shoulder?

I certainly think anything is possible at this time....I do NOT think she killed them all either...supposedly she left notes....but she MIGHT have been FORCED to write a she might have been FORCED to write a check for $10,000....but I am not sure that anyone will ever know the whole truth and nothing but the truth...

It's unfortunate that innocents are made to pay the price for the people who should have just put the gun in their own mouths to start with. But as the old saying goes, guns don't kill people, people who get their hands on guns kill people.
