KINSTON, N.C. — MasterBrand Cabinets will lay off more than 150 workers at its Kinston plant as the Indiana-based manufacturer shifts to a new product line.

The Free Press of Kinston reports that the layoffs are scheduled to begin this week.

The company is shifting the production of its Aristokraft cabinets from Kinston to its facility in Ferdinand, Ind.

MasterBrand will start producing its new line of Kitchen Classic cupboards at the Kinston plant, which requires less labor to manufacture.

Executive vice president Rob Mullally says the switch makes better use of the facilities.

Last year, MasterBrand announced an expansion in Kinston, saying it would add more than 300 jobs at the plant by 2013.

The layoffs bring the number of workers at the plant to around 370. At the height of the housing boom, it had about 900 employees.
