— The North Carolina General Assembly will reconvene Monday, but legislators said the skeleton session should adjourn quickly.

Among several legislative committee meetings Monday morning, the joint Transportation Oversight committee is expected to roll out a compromise proposal on ferry tolls.

The 2011-12 state budget mandated that the state Department of Transportation raise $5 million a year through new tolls on five of seven ferry routes.

Gov. Beverly Perdue issued an executive order in February to block the tolls, but state Attorney General Roy Cooper issued a letter saying that the executive order "raises substantial concerns under our Constitution" and that the new tolls should be should implemented.

State lawmakers said they do not expect to take any recorded votes in the main session of the General Assembly, which convenes at noon Monday.

House Speaker Thom Tillis said a limited number of colleagues would attend and encouraged others not to accept expense checks unless they are traveling to Raleigh for other legislative activity.

Republican legislators set aside a few dates this year to reconvene if redistricting map changes were required. Democrats are suspicious of these meetings because GOP House members overrode a veto by Gov. Beverly Perdue during a January visit.

The Legislature is next set to return May 16 for its traditional budget-adjustment session, which should last several weeks.

So what can we expect from this fun group of little right wingers that took over our once respectable state legislature? Another bill to raise taxes on ferry riders? No action on capping the gas tax like they promised when campaigning? Spending our TAX DOLLARS working on an unconstitutional amendment to deprive a group of people of their basic civil rights? Fire some more teachers? Or maybe just give their staff some more huge raises using our TAX DOLLARS? No matter what the REPUBLICANS do, you can be sure that they will do NOTHING to promote that "job, Jobs, JOBS!!!!" lie anymore. REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER AND VOTE AGAINST ALL REPUBLICANS IN EVERY RACE!!!

Are you living in a reality where a sitting DEMOCRAT governor, who is not seeking to have their corrupt regime returned to power no less, is not holding the power to Veto any measure she so choose? Must be.-ifcdirector

You do understand that even if Bev vetoed the bill (which the Right has yet to attempt to even bother to start talking about) they hold majority to override her just like they did with “amendment one.” Why won’t your leaders address the gas tax going up every six months? I thought they ran on lower taxes and job creation…

"Let me guess, they are going to IGNORE the gas tax 'recalculation" YET AGAIN"

Will the legistature address the privatization of the NC DPS medical services. I have not heard anything in the media or from the legislature about this. Why so secretive?

Let me guess, they are going to IGNORE the gas tax 'recalculation" YET AGAIN (would be the THIRD time in a row for the repubs in NC) but we can take guns to Pullen Park…

[What a complete waste of time and money. Isn't that what the Republicans usually blame the Democrats for?]As compaired to when the Democrats were in power they met for months at a time?

Short session? Really? Perhaps these people are not addressing the "issues" of what needs to be done. Seems like to me that the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-779368 I think this just might be an example of what is going on. It seems like to me that there are so many "laws" that no one, even the attorneys, DA's and Judges, knows what is legal and lawful anymore...or perhaps they do know and they are just not following them. Laws are laws and those who are "SUPPOSE to enforce them" should know what is legal and lawful and what is not....interesting thing here that was just filed in February by the NC Court of Appeals. Wonder just how many thousands of people this has affected in one way or another....as the "wheels of justice keep spinning"?

Tax Man, while they can bring it up to override, they do not have the votes to get it in. UNFORTUNATELY. Maybe someone needs to go to early voting and vote in the place of ALL of the DEMs and maybe they will figure out that Voter Fraud is alive and well (ask Eric Holder) and hurts everyone.

  • Tax Man Apr 23, 2012

What about the Voter ID act? We need that in place immediately! Aren't they going to override Bev's veto on it?

What a complete waste of time and money. Isn't that what the Republicans usually blame the Democrats for? Now it's the GOP running the show and meeting for no reason.
