Perdue shifts Etheridge to Irene recovery
Gov. Beverly Perdue on Friday put former Congressman Bob Etheridge in charge of North Carolina's efforts to recover from Hurricane Irene.

Etheridge will coordinate efforts with the Division of Emergency Management and other agencies of state government to assist businesses, local governments, farmers and schools affected by the storm.
“Bob Etheridge knows how to get the assistance we need from Washington, and he knows the needs of North Carolina’s communities, schools and farmers,” Perdue said in a statement.
She cited his work as a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, which oversees the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the House Agriculture Committee.
Etheridge’s three-month position will be funded by a grant from the North Carolina Rural Center.
In February, Perdue appointed him to head the state’s Office of Economic Recovery and Investment to oversee the use of federal stimulus funds in North Carolina. He will step down from that role in order to take the hurricane recovery post.
