After a whirlwind week of map drawing and veto overrides, House Speaker Thom Tillis said tonight the House schedule Thursday will be light.

Tillis said the only items he intends to take up tomorrow are H719, a Senate proposal to rewrite voting maps for several counties, and the adjournment resolution that will set the terms for the next special session. “I expect we’ll be out of here by early afternoon tomorrow,” Tillis said.

Rumors abounded late today that the House could take action on a same-sex marriage amendment, and that a series of local bills were being rewritten to institute voter ID requirements at the county level. (Local bills are not subject to veto.)

But Tillis said neither issue would be taken up Thursday. “Nothing's gonna happen tomorrow except a lot of happy legislators going home a little bit early,” he said this evening.

The House began the process today of trying to override the veto of S727, the measure that would have stripped teachers’ group NCAE of its ability to collect dues via state payroll deduction. But after heated debate, House leaders postponed the vote. Tillis doesn’t expect they’ll try it again Thursday.

“I want to get out of here. I think the other members do. It’s been a tough week for the minority caucus with redistricting,” Tillis said. “I think what we want to do is adjourn and move along.”

Tillis confirmed September 12 as the date lawmakers plan to come back for their special session on constitutional amendments.
