Behind the Bills: More guns in more places

Published: 2011-03-04 20:25:00

The House Judiciary committee is set to vote next week on whether private employers should be required to let workers bring guns onto their property, as long as the weapons are locked up in their parked cars.

H63 is just one of several bills that would ease NC"s gun laws, especially for people with concealed weapons permits. H111 would require cities to allow concealed weapons in public parks.  And H184 would give every elected state or local official with a concealed-carry permit the right to carry guns into schools, events, and even on the House and Senate floors.

Republican leaders say current restrictions don't allow responsible gun owners to adequately protect themselves. But other legislators say more guns in more places won't make anyone safer.

I would like to add that on the one occasion I had to draw my weapon I never had to fire a shot. Two cars tried to force my wife and I off the road between Knightdale and Rocky Mount on 64. One got in front and slowed down while a larger SUV blocked me in from the left, trying to force me to the shoulder. When I simply lifted my gun from under the seat they immediately dropped back, both at the same time. They obviously were in communication. They then took the next exit. I never aimed, never fired. Simply displayed that we were not helpless.

PBJ - Skipped that all important English Comp and Grammar 101 huh?

Known fact individuals with a concealed weapons permit have less incidents of violence. I believe if one has a concealed permit they should be able too carry these same venues as the elected officials are voting on. Even if that means taking an additional class with more scenario based training, just a thought. It comes down too being prepared I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Headpro, HB 814 does not give elected officials CC privs. It allows them to carry IF they have their CC. Although, I appreaciate the "tongue in cheek".

PBJ, First, please read the proposed laws before you say anything else. Your entire statement(s) are ramblings that have not one fact correct. People do fail the test and not get the permits. People do not pass background checks and don't get the permit. Educate yourself before making yourself look stupid.

Whew, counting the days (37) until I leave this crazy place.

"all you need for a concealed weapons permit is a safety class" This statement is another from a reporter that does not know what she is talking about. When I applied for my permit, I took a class that required me to shoot and show that I knew how to handle the gun before I received my certificate to go apply for my concealed carry permit. Every 5 years I have to pay $95 to apply for renewal. There is awaiting period while they check your record to see if they find a reason not to renew. Biased media makes me.............

Flow Easy,

I do carry a gun (part of the time). Carrying a gun is actually a big responsibility, and therefore, I am actually less aggressive (my aggression is giving someone the finger or yelling something), but when I have a gun, I don't even do that.

You learn not to be the aggressor in a situation, so I am far less likely to confront someone when I am carrying. It doesn't give me courage to confront people, or to act stupidly, but it does give me comfort, that if I was to actually need it, I have it with me. It may not save me, but then that's why I also carry insurance when I drive. I don't plan on needing a gun, but if I do need it, I'm glad I have it.

In my own personal opinion the people on this website areasking for the return of the days of the old wild west daay of shoot outs in the public streets for sure if this kind of stupid thinking continmues to prevail in an by the crazy legistures let them carry in the state legisture or even better allow for citizens in this state to be allowed to carry in the nc house an the nc senate an their will in all liklelyhood end up being a whole lot fewer legistures to aruge with over this kinds of stupid issues for surely they would not allow3 for the state state employee to come an be armed with real weapons in the current legistuere for i know for sure that there would in no doubt be a lot fewer legistures thank you

dtwoowhtow: question for you from a life time gun owner what induvsual is going to go an pay for the instructions of a conceled gun carry permit some where an then this same person fails the test an is denied the carry permit i'll bet you that there is 1 out of A 1000 THAT IS ALLOWED TO FAIL THIS CARRY PERMIT TEST AFTER THEM HAVING HAD PAID TO TAKE THE COARSE IS IT ALWAYS A PREGONE CONCLUDSION THAT IF YOU APY FOR THE CLASS OF THIS NATURE THAT YOU WILL PASS IT JUST FOR THE MEAR FACT OF ASSISTING IN THE GUN NUT PREFERLATION OF WEAPONS FOR THE SALES BY THE GUN DEALERS AN THE MANFACTURES OF THESE WEAPONS PEIOR END OF DISCUSSION THESE COMPANIE THAT ARE THE MANFACTURES OF THESE WEAPONS COULD REALLY CARE LESS IF YOUSHOOT AN KILL YOUR SELF OR SOMEONE ELSE OR NOT SO LONG AS THEY ARE GETTING THEIR PROFFITS FROM THE SALE OF THE GUNS GUNS IN THE FIRST PLACE THANK YOU
