Gubernatorial candidate takes stand against marriage amendment

Barbara Howe, the Libertarian candidate for governor, is so upset with the recent vote to amend North Carolina's constitution to define heterosexual marriage as the only legal union in the state that she decided to scrap her own marriage license.

Howe and her husband, Tom, set up a paper shredder outside the Legislative Building on Tuesday morning and ran their 35-year-old marriage license through it as a sign of protest.

"I believe in limited government," she said. "Government should protect us from people who hurts us but otherwise just stay out of our lives, and that's not what we're getting in North Carolina."

The marriage amendment writes discrimination into the North Carolina constitution, Barbara Howe said, calling it "an abomination" and vowing to work to repeal it.

Not for or against gays , but the goverment wants to take away all of our freedom ! Tax me to deah and tell me what i can and can not do is not what this country was based on ! What is the difference in a nonpartisan and an independent party, they should be one in one against the crooked two party system ! You have my support Barbara !!!

I agree with you, timtooltime. I will say this, though. I think if two adult human beings wish to marry, they whould be allowed to. There is enough hatefulness in this world, if people find love, by all means let them enjoy in like everyone else does. That is my opinion, and I don't care if anyone agrees with me or not.

The voters have spoken and this woman takes umbrage to how the citizens of NC voted? And her response is typical of a progressive's thinking; I know she's a liberterian, but her actions are that of a sore loser. I have to live with a President who's past and experience are as murky as the Cape Fear, this woman has to live with the marriage amendment. She doesn't like it? Then she's free to move to MD, CA, MA or any other state that socially accepts same sex marriage...

No, you are free to move to the Vatican. This country was founded on the concept of Separation of Church and State and I intend to ensure that it stays that way. If I have to file lawsuits to do so, then so be it but I will not sit by and allow theocrats to turn this country into a theocracy.

The voters could not have approved the amendment, because the text of the amendment was not on the ballot.
